What Is An Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty?
The main aim of an AONB is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of an area and is designated mainly on the basis of the unrivalled beauty of its landscape, coastline and islands. Llŷn was one of the first areas to receive this status in 1956.

The Llŷn Peninsula celebrates its half century as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) this year.

Llŷn also has significant areas of lowland heath and is a haven for birds and a variety of other wildlife species. The area’s rich historic legacy with field boundaries and monuments dating from Mesolithic times and spectacularly sited Iron Age hill-forts such as Tre'r Ceiri and the Welsh language and culture also contributes greatly to the area’s unique character.

The ancient landscape is dominated by the majestic teeth of the Rivals mountain range, and there, sitting like a great throne amidst the heather, is Tre’r Ceiri Iron Age hill fort. This “Town of Giants” is Britain’s best-preserved Neolithic settlement. Your legs may feel the strain as you reach the top – but the view makes it worth the effort.

Once you see Llŷn, you’ll know why it’s designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The rich farmlands burst with pride, the whitewashed cottages create an unforgettable picture. But to really appreciate all this beauty, climb atop Uwchmynydd at the furthermost tip of the Peninsula, accessible by car or on foot, where the panorama is truly breathtaking. Lying out in a sparkling sea is Bardsey Island or Ynys Enlli, one of Wales’ treasures, where it is said twenty thousand saints lie buried! The island was once a place of pilgrimage, as testified by the myriad tiny churches, which dot the peninsula, still offering quiet refuge. Now Bardsey is a naturalist’s haven – over two thousand Manx Shearwaters nest here and the island is on the migratory paths of many other birds as well, making it an important research site. On Bardsey you can be enveloped by the silence and escape from the world and its worries.

Whatever the time of year it’s easy to find something to fill your days in Llŷn.
